Allotment plot found and stat of this blog

The first post of a blog is always very difficult. I did not want to do the generic ‘First post’ that says nothing, so in this post I intend to introduce myself, what this blog is all about and what the vision for it is. It is true of course that blogs are an organic thing (no pun intended!) they have a habit of taking their own direction, however I can outline my initial aim for the blog and the direction that I am starting off in.

Who am I?

I am Matt Houldsworth, by profession I am an IT Project Manager, and in my private time I run a web design and online marketing business. I have several other blogs, Matthouldsworth.com and Earning From Affiliates to name two.

I am 30 and am engaged to the beautiful Cheryl. We have a 9 month old daughter Eva, who is the very reason why we have decided to get an allotment, but more of that later. We live in a town called Hessle in East Yorkshire in the UK.

I am a keen gardener, although I would not say that I am any kind of expert. I enjoyed gardening as a child with my mother. When I got my first house, I had a veg plot at the bottom of the garden, which provided me with a good crop of various foods. However I have now moved and have a smaller garden which now must be dedicated to a play area for Eva as she grows.

The Allotment

When Eva was born (9 moths ago) we applied to the council for a plot at the local Council Allotments, however since then we have heard nothing! I know that allotment gardening is becoming very popular, however in this area I am not so sure that it really is that popular. The council allotment is huge, so I can not see that there is not a natural turn over of plots as people leave from the area.

We are in the fortunate position in that we have been offered a nice plot of land, which has been used as an allotment for years. The gentleman who owns it is poorly and now unable to continue to garden, he knew we were looking and offered it to us. It is in a very private and secluded location which is idea, no prying eyes and little chance of vandalism.

I have visited the plot briefly and from memory it has 4 beds, and a fairly large greenhouse. I would guess it is as large, if not larger than a council plot. I will be visiting the plot again and will measure up and take some pictures.

We are very lucky in that the land has been gardened for several years, and as such means that the ground is in a perfect condition meaning that all the preparation has been done and the land is ready to go. Of course this the perfect time of year to begin an allotment, in the next few weeks there are a number of things that can start going in.

This Blog

On this blog I intend to log all the activity on the allotment, the lessons I have learned, the successes achived and the failures that will inevitably come. I hope that it will become a record of the progress on the allotment year on year. I hope that what I learn and write about may be of use to others.
