Preparing a bean trench
posted by: Digitalquill in Broad Beans, Photos, Video on 02 23rd, 2009 | |

On Sunday I took a walk down to the allotment, with a wheel barrow full of veg peelings, a few funny looks from passers by, but hey!

I wanted to get a bean trench prepared. I took a video of the preparation.

How to prepare a bean trench

  1. Dig a small trench, 1 spit deep (about 25-30 cm)
  2. Line the bottom and sides with news paper, this helps retain moisture and saves water
  3. Fill the bottom of the trench with Veg peelings and organic matter, do not use cooked food or any meat. There is allot of debate about what is best, just potato peelings, grass cuttings etc. but I have just used anything I had in the compost bin.
  4. Mark the ends of the trench so you know where it is.
  5. Back fill the soil into the trench and it is ready for planting.

Here are some pictures of the process
