This weekend I got in two rows of the first early seed potatoes. I have gone for Duke of York, never grown these before so we will see what happens and what they are like.
I did not get chance to chit the potatoes, however based on the reading I have done, there is some debate as to if this makes any difference or not. We will see.
Here is a video of how it was done.
- Make sure that the soil is well prepared with manure or garden compost. This is best done in the autumn, thus giving it the winter to break down a little
- Dig a trench about 4 inches deep
- Place the seed potatoes with the sprouts pointing upward. If there are more than about 3 sprouts, rub the others off, as this will encourage tubers to grow rather than foliage
- Back fill the trench
- Mark the row
