Planting First Early Seed Potatoes
posted by: Digitalquill in Potatos, Video on 03 2nd, 2009 | |

This weekend I got in two rows of the first early seed potatoes. I have gone for Duke of York, never grown these before so we will see what happens and what they are like.

I did not get chance to chit the potatoes, however based on the reading I have done, there is some debate as to if this makes any difference or not. We will see.

Here is a video of how it was done.

  1. Make sure that the soil is well prepared with manure or garden compost. This is best done in the autumn, thus giving it the winter to break down a little
  2. Dig a trench about 4 inches deep
  3. Place the seed potatoes with the sprouts pointing upward. If there are more than about 3 sprouts, rub the others off, as this will encourage tubers to grow rather than foliage
  4. Back fill the trench
  5. Mark the row
