posted by: Digitalquill in Garden Equipment, General on 04 28th, 2009 | | No Comments »

We have finally had some sustained rain here in Hull. I know that there has not been any sort of drought, but neither has there been much int he way of rain over the last few weeks. I suspect that is why the Carrots and beetroot are not progressing as well as they could be. [...]

I have been pleasantly surprised at how popular my armature attempts at videos have been. They have received over 1500 views on YouTube and several comments. Some of the discussion I have had as a result of the videos has been very useful. I hope to keep producing them mainly for me to keep a [...]

posted by: Digitalquill in General on 04 23rd, 2009 | | No Comments »

I am attempting to keep a record of everything that is planted, when it was planted and then a record of what produce I get from the allotment, so that I can compare year to year how things are doing. This will give me some idea about what works and what does not work, it [...]

I am still a little disappointed with the carrots, beetroot and parsnips but hopefully they will start to come. The potatoes [...]

Creating the fruit cage
posted by: Digitalquill in General on 04 12th, 2009 | | No Comments »

Creating the fruit cage was a simple task for me, the framework had already been created by the previous owner of the plot. A sturdy steel pole arrangement which has made the ideal fruit cage. I bought some netting from Homebase with a mesh size of 20×20 mm and then wrapped it round the frame. [...]

First produce – Rhubarb
posted by: Digitalquill in Harvest Record on 04 12th, 2009 | | No Comments »

I picked the first produce from the allotment this weekend. The first of the Rhubarb! We then had Rhubarb and custard for pudding, can it get any better? I am keeping a record of everything that I both plant and harvest from the allotment. This first crop was a modest 350 grams but plenty for [...]

The Rhubarb is motoring along, Mange Tout is coming through, the first rows of early potatoes are showing through, the rows of carrots, beetroot and parsnips are coming along. [...]
